Oxygen nasal cannula or nasal prong is a medical device used to deliver supplemental oxygen to patients who need it, often those with conditions like COPD or pulmonary fibrosis, through two prongs inserted into the nostrils.

Purpose:

Nasal cannulas provide a low to moderate level of supplemental oxygen to individuals struggling to breathe or with low oxygen levels.

How it works:

The cannula consists of a lightweight tube with two prongs that are inserted into the nostrils, allowing oxygen to flow directly into the nasal passages.

Common Uses:
  • Respiratory Conditions: COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), pulmonary fibrosis (scarring of the lungs), and other conditions that make it difficult to breathe.
  • Hospital and Home Use: Nasal cannulas are used in both hospital settings and at home by patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
  • Flow Rates:
    • Low-flow nasal cannula (LFNC): Typically delivers oxygen at rates of 1–10
